The Stephen Lewis Foundation

The Stephen Lewis Foundation is a Canadian organisation which works with grassroots organisations to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 2003 they have partnered with 325 community-based organisations in 15 countries, funding over 1,800 different initiatives. All proposals for projects are made by the community-based organisations themselves to address their specific local needs.

These grassroots groups are a lifeline for their communities and projects might do any of the following:
- provide education and counselling about HIV prevention, care and treatment
- distribute food and medication
- visit the sick and vulnerable in their homes to provide holistic homecare
- help children orphaned by AIDS and other vulnerable children gain access to education and cope with their grief
- support grandmothers who are very often the main carers for their orphaned grandchildren
